Child abuse cases skyrocketed in the fiscal year 2007

Shiga Prefectural Government announced that the number of child abuse cases reported to prefectural offices in the fiscal year 2007 was 764, reaching the highest record ever. Types of child abuse were the following: neglect cases were 397, pysical abuse cases were 235, emotional abuse cases were 115, and sexual abuse cases were 17.

Cases consulted tend to get more complicated. 63% of the 764 was prolonged cases which required more than 1-year support. "The number of parents having trouble with child care is getting bigger. We have seen prolonged cases increasing, because our staff have been able to deal with those cases more carefully," says an official of the Office of Children and Youth Affairs.
