Shiga's population exceeded 1.4 million

Prefectural Government announced that Shiga's population rose above 1.4 million for the first time in its history. The densely populated areas are Otsu and Konan (Kusatsu, Ritto, and Moriyama), but Kosei (Takashima) and Kohoku (Kinomoto, Takatsuki, and Taga) have become underpopulated areas. "We would like to focus on Kosei and Kohoku to develop the prefecture as a whole," said Governor Kada at a press conference.

The exact population as of August 1 is 1,400,115. According to Prefectural Government, the rate of increase of Shiga is 0.52% in 2007, ranking the prefecture fourth in Japan. The top three are Tokyo, Aichi, and Kanagawa.

Governor Kada says, "I guess Shiga has exquisite balance between nature and urbanized towns, which fascinates people."
