Population ageing: the rate of ageing reached 19.5% in Shiga

Prior to Respect-for-the-Aged Day, Shiga Prefecture unveiled statistics related to population ageing. It turned out that the number of citizens over 65 years old is 273,269 which constitute 19.5% of the total population, marking the highest rate in Shiga's history.

As for the rate of ageing, there are 5 prominent municipalities where over 25% of the residents are over 65 years old. On the other hand, the least rate was found in Ritto and Konan, and Kusatsu.

The number of people over 100 years old is 337, reaching the largest number ever recorded.
