Municipal merger: New Omihachiman born

On March 21, new "Omihachiman" was born by merging two municipalities - Omihachiman and Azuchi. However, the new city had a great deal of difficulty from the start. For example, Azuchi's town council, influenced by anti-merger members, resolved to reject the merger at the last minute. Acting mayor, almost always selected through dialogue among the parties, couldn't be appointed because of disagreement between the two mayors.

At the ceremony held at Omihachiman city office, Eisho Fujitani, former mayor of Omihachiman, appointed as acting mayor by Governor Kada, said, "we will create a new city filled with compassion and mutual understanding." There were about 200 participants at the venue, but Hiroshi Obayashi, former mayor of Azuchi, was not invited because he has been opposing the merger.
