Pref. Government seeks new strategy to boost the local economy

On April 20, Shiga Prefectual Government unveiled its plan to formulate a new strategy to develop prefecture-based industries via fostering environment-related industries and expanding domestic demand, which is expected to create more jobs. The plan was unveiled at a first meeting of the Planning Committee for New Strategy on Industrial Development, a special committee administrated by the prefecture.

The prefecture's plan proposed features the need to adapt to low-carbon economy being accelerated to deal with global warming. The prefecture points out that new industries such as alternative energy and eco-tourism should be fostered. In addition, being aware of the current industrial structure in Shiga too dependant on manufacturing, the Shiga Prefectural Government thinks that the prefecture should focus on developing industries such nursing, medical treatment, and tourism to deal with domestic demand.

The committee consists of 15 professionals ranging from corporate executives to academic scholars. It will submit a strategic plan to the prefecture in November.
