Ueno runs for the gubernatorial election in July

A rival candidate has appeared against the incumbent governor - finally. It turned out that Kenichiro Ueno, president of the LDP's Shiga branch, will leave the party and will run for the gubernatorial election on July 11. This plan will officially be approved by the party's executive meeting on May 30.

According to an insider, it was decided that the former member of House of Representatives runs in the election as an independent because he might be able to gain larger public support, especially from those who are critical of Governor Kada's policy. "We, as the grass-roots organization instead of a political party, should fight against the incumbent governor. Which party you belong to doesn't matter," several persons concerned reportedly say.

On the other hand, on May 29 at a meeting with her supporters, Governor Kada mentioned about the competitor. "I will definitely appeal to the people of Shiga, emphasizing what I have accomplished in the last four years." She also questioned Ueno's decision saying, "How could it be possible for a central-government-oriented politician like him to talk about the great vision on a local-government basis."
